I visited Naanstaap in Ilford with a friend after iftar to have chai, as it’s usually one of our favourite spots. Unfortunately, this visit left us very disappointed due to the behaviour of one of the staff members at the till I’m attaching a picture of him. There were dates placed on the counter display. Since it is Ramadan and many places offer dates for people breaking their fast, my friend politely asked if he could have one. The staff member responded in a very rude manner, saying they were only for display. After that, my friend asked if there was anything available for iftar. The staff member replied, “You’ve paid for chai, what else are you going to get?” which felt very disrespectful and made us feel quite embarrassed. He later mentioned that he could bring dates from inside if we wanted with a cheap look but by that point the way he had spoken to us had already made us feel uncomfortable. If he had explained things politely, the situation would have been completely different. We have always loved Naanstaap chai and it has been one of our favourite places to visit, but after this experience we honestly don’t feel like coming back.
