I had hoped for a pleasant dessert outing, but sadly Haute Dolci Edinburgh gave a very disappointing experience. The atmosphere wasn’t enjoyable either, rather loud and chaotic and it didn’t feel particularly welcoming, not the most comfortable place to sit back and enjoy a treat. At times, it hardly felt like being in Edinburgh at all the overall ambience felt more reminiscent of a busy Middle Eastern-style dessert hall than a relaxed café, and we couldn’t help but feel as though we were being looked at somewhat judgmentally. Service was curious, to say the least. A service charge appeared on the bill without being mentioned, and despite this, no one checked whether everything was to our liking. When ordering, we were repeatedly asked if that was all, with a tone that felt less attentive and more faintly disapproving. The drinks were impressively sweet — those with a serious sugar tolerance may fare better. The Pistachio San Sebastian was the biggest letdown; the strikingly bright green colour and artificial taste made it feel more style over substance. All in all, the experience didn’t match expectations and I can’t recommend it.
