Every pastry starts with masterful lamination of the best French butter into our dough to create those layers of flaky, buttery heaven. From there we put our own spin on beloved flavors and use creative techniques to reinvent breakfast pastries from savory to sweet, focusing on properly seasoned, balanced, and nuanced flavor profiles in every bite. Our pastries are unique for their shard-like flake and structure, differentiating them from other small flake and heavy styles.

Lined up at 7:45 am on a Thursday and was miraculously 2nd in line- line was around the block by 8:15! Overall I enjoyed B&Cs sweet pastries more than their savory ones (maybe I just didn’t pick the best ones out of all the options?). The standout from the June menu was def the raspberry passionfruit pain suisse- all of the croissants that they make are super flaky and has an insane crunch to it but this was one was superior; also rly loved how they left the tartness of the passionfruit and combined it with the sweetness of the vanilla cream. Can skip the Morty P since it’s basically a ham and cheese croissant that has a similar flavor profile as juniper and arsicault, just with the pistachio pesto added to it
Super crowded. Not worth the 1+ hour wait. If you’re able to get in with a short line, do it. Just be aware most likely they’re out of 70% of their pastries. Extremely overcrowded in the shop. Would be nice to see one more worker dedicated to make it feel a bit more spacious. Workers work on extra slow mode. They know how big the lines are outside, yet they work at a snail pace. The owner and her dad are super amazing people. I’m super happy for their success and wish them all the best.
Get there an hour early before it opens. Long line if you come when it opens. Expect a 1 to 2 hour wait. There is a limit of 10 pastries per person. It can get crowded inside with very limited seating. There is no restroom inside. Menu changes monthly. I'm glad we tried it. I would not wait in line again for these pastries. Overall, the pastries were hit or miss. We thought the Banana praline cruffin was the absolute best we ever had. The pistachio cardamom sugar croissant was second best. The pistachio balanced the flavor of the cardamom, which can sometimes overpower everything. Our least favorite was the twice baked coconut passionfruit croissant. Taking a bite of it tasted like I ate a chunk of oil. I don't know if it had to do with the coconut oil or just the overall grease that settled on the bottom of the croissant. The passionfruit was not tart at all which would have helped this pastry. Overall a big miss and a pass on this. The everything ham and cheese croissant was decent. I would skip on this get the ham and cheese from Tartine Bakery. They make there ham and cheese croissant more substantial. I do give butter and crumble credit for there lamination process. There croissants have a crispy thin flakey exterior. It shatters when you take a bite out of it. Almost as good as the croissants from Arsicault Bakery. I'm happy for Butter and Crumble for there success. Hopefully they open a few more locations.
I think the pastries are definitely very aesthetically pleasing and do taste quite good but Ariscault has better pastries and no wait. I’m not sure if I would get in line an hour before opening just to wait even longer again. The workers were very sweet though and I enjoyed watching the croissants get made.
Butter and Crumble has been in North Beach since Oct. 2023 but still has the hype and commands the crowds 2 years later and for good reason. I love their story, that they are woman owned and even you can see the full women staff baking in the back while ordering. Started lining up at 8:30 am (open at 9 am) on a Saturday and the line was already out and around the corner. Total time from waiting and going out the door was 2 hours. I prefer them more than Tartine but their croissants are flakier than Ariscault which is still my top. There's 2 seats in the restaurant to wait. Max order is 10 per party, 3 per item max. Chorizo Butternut Croquiche: My favorite savory item. Hearty and perfect blend of of cheese and spices. Salami & Brie Bearclaw: A little too salty for my taste but then again I am now a bit fan of cured meat. Pistachio Cardamom Sugar Croissant: Flaky, good balance of sweetness and honestly can't go wrong with a pistachio flavor. Brown Butterscotch Latte (not shown): Fan favorite among people in line. Not too sweet just the way I like it. They did run out of the whipped cream when we got in but was making another batch if you waited.
Don’t listen to the low reviews. I have had croissants from some of France’s most inspired bakers and from the best of patisserie in NYC (Levaine’s / Dominique Ansel) to list only a couple. I get that the lines can be long. I get that the products are limited. But how is that a bad thing toward the product? The product is extraordinary to say the least. I don’t mean to stir the pot by comparing as I’ve had some exceptional croissants in Bay Area like Backhaus / Arsicault / B. Patisserie / Neighbour bakehouse / Tartine - the list goes on! But these guys have some of the most creative combos. Execution of the pastry dough is not only brilliant, but somehow I feel it may be one of the lightest croissants (the base croissant not the filled ones with cream ofc lol!) It is a whole experience - if you’re coming, come with the mindset of enjoying the lineup experience where - chances are - the people in front of you and behind you are either there because they’re partaking in this super viral trend (based on merit and quality!) or they are back because they know it’s worth the wait! The last thing I want to say is that the people who are serving you are excited, very polite and passionate because they believe in their product and they’re proud to be a part of what really has become an Internet sensation.
