I had a very upsetting experience at Sunny Foodmart today around 5:45 PM. My young child (under 6) accidentally spilled his drink in the store. I immediately asked my older child and him to stay by the spill while I went to notify customer service and get tissues to help clean it. While I was doing that, a male employee who was hauling boxes noticed my children standing there and kindly stayed with them, reassuring them and saying he would take care of it. I appreciated his kindness and professionalism. However, while I was away, an older asian man approached my children, yelled loudly at them, said he was tired of people spilling things, and took away the remainder of their drink. He continued shouting at them, despite them being young children and despite the fact that this was clearly an accident. There are no signs posted prohibiting outside food or drinks, so his reaction felt especially unnecessary and aggressive. The other employee who had been helping told my children it was okay and appeared to confront the man, which I’m very grateful for. My children held it together in the moment, but once we got back to the car, my oldest told me what had happened, and my youngest was visibly upset and shaken. It is completely unacceptable for an adult to aggressively yell at young children over an accidental spill, especially when I was actively trying to address and clean the situation. Accidents happen, and while I believe in teaching my children responsibility and accountability, they should never be made to feel scared or humiliated by another adult. I want to sincerely thank the employee who showed compassion and stepped in, but I hope management addresses how customers, especially children, are treated in your store.
