ordered the doubles, mixed veggie roti and chicken roti. i've had doubles from many different places, and there's is not so great. the baras are done nice but the chana is way too hard and under-cooked. also it doesn't stay well inside the bara. the mixed veggie roti was basically all potato with few different veggies. the chicken roti was the same with more potato than chicken. and i felt everything was a little too overpriced
I was genuinely disappointed with my experience at D Hot Shoppe, especially after hearing so many good things and looking forward to trying the food for the first time. I ordered two large curry chicken rotis and two doubles, but after getting home and checking the order, I realized I had been given two small curry chicken rotis instead of the large ones that I specifically paid extra for. Unfortunately, the experience became even more disappointing when I found a hair in one of the rotis. Due to obvious health and safety concerns, that roti was immediately thrown out and not consumed. Finding something like that completely takes away from the dining experience and raises concerns about quality control and food handling standards. The doubles were decent in size, and the bara itself was soft, fresh, and enjoyable. However, the channa lacked seasoning and depth of flavour. Overall, the food was missing the authentic Trinidadian taste and flare that I was expecting. Being Trinidadian myself, I know the bold, rich, well-seasoned flavours that make Trini food so special, and unfortunately this did not deliver that experience for me. Instead, it felt more catered toward a westernized palate rather than staying true to authentic Trinidadian cuisine. What made this even more disappointing was that this was my first time trying D Hot Shoppe, and I left feeling frustrated and unsatisfied overall. Between receiving the wrong order size, the hygiene issue, and the lack of authentic flavour, it was not the experience I had hoped for. I truly hope the owner takes this feedback seriously, as there is clearly potential there. With better attention to quality control, consistency, and authenticity, the experience could be much better.
