Rare Steakhouse is one of Melbourne's finest steakhouses, with three restaurants located in the city. We are committed to serving premium quality produce and creating a welcoming environment where customers can savour the flavour of Australian beef at its very best. Our beef is sourced from across the country, ranging from Gippsland and Ballan in Victoria, Murray Bridge in South Australia and Rockhampton in Queensland, and is graded by Meat Standards of Australia for its cut and quality. Each cut is chosen for its distinct characteristics, flavour profile and eating quality, as well as its impact on the environment. We went to Rare Midtown in Melbourne for a casual catch-up with my partner and his brother, and it turned out to be a really nice setting for that kind of evening. The location itself is tucked away in a quiet alley, which gives it a calm, almost hidden feel away from the CBD rush. The building is one of those classic old Melbourne spots—stone walls, dim lighting, and a bit of a wine cellar vibe. Loved that atmosphere. There’s also a menu displayed outside, which is helpful, and pricing feels reasonable for a steakhouse—not overly fine dining. Service-wise, our server had just started (day two!), so she wasn’t super confident with recommendations, but she genuinely tried—kept checking with the manager and made the effort, which we appreciated. We ordered three mains and a starter—probably too much. If you’re going, I’d recommend sharing 2 mains instead. The Angus beef ribs were the highlight—super juicy, well-cooked, and easily the best dish of the night. The steaks (porterhouse and scotch fillet, medium rare) were decent but slightly chewy. For sides, we tried all three—chips, sweet potato chips, and mash. The sweet potato chips are a must—honestly one of the best I’ve had. Overall, it’s a great spot for a relaxed, chatty evening with drinks rather than a full-on food exploration. I’d definitely go back—mainly for the ribs—and probably keep it simpler next time.
