This place keeps deteriorating with each visit. The bathrooms are absolutely disgusting, with broken fixtures adding to the misery. Last time, the door handle was unusable; now the stall lock doesn’t even work and can be pushed open from the outside—completely unacceptable. We ordered the family pack lamb biryani, and it was a huge letdown. Only two pieces were freshly cooked, while the rest were clearly old, tough, and inedible. To top it off, the waitress seemed eager to rush us out the door and barely put any effort into cleaning the table. Definitely not coming back.

My name is Adnan Khan and I visited Sydney, Australia for 6 weeks from 30th October 2024 to 11th December 2024. For halal option food, I found this student biryani restaurant at surrey hills. I have spent 40 days there and each day i visited thrice and eat almost all the items during my stay. I am truly saying that I enjoyed a lot there and their food quality is very good, taste is awesome and hygiene is also perfect. My survival during this period could become difficult if I missed this restaurant. Their whole staff is welcoming and supportive. Prices are also reasonable and quantity of food is good. I urge everyone if they are near to this restaurant and can go there, please go there and enjoy with your friends and family. At last, only limitation of this restaurant is that they have no CHAPLI KABABS which i missed a lot. I request student biryani to add this dish in their menu. I personally missing this restaurant a lot. If in future, I get a chance to visit Sydney again then I will surely come to the surrey hills to eat at student biryani. Thank you student biryani for making my trip memorable. I will always remember how I used to asked receipts from the staff after each order. Thank you.

We usually go to student biryani in auburn but yesterday we went to bondi and on our way back decided to get take-away from the surry hills branch. Unfortunately the food was uneatable and the worst we have ever tasted. It ended up in the bin.The Family platter had chicken tikkas, almost all of it raw, seekh kebabs were too spicy and had hair embedded in it. I ordered 3 naans, they gave us only 2…and instead of shami kebabs, they gave us bubble squeak drenched in oil. They didnot get even one thing on the order right.. We contacted them as we live too far to go back but they said manager was not in and to call back next day. Called back again next day to be informed to call again after sometime. Called again and finally spoke to someone who said that only option we had was to go back to surry hills and get the food replaced.. that’s not an option for us as we live more than an hour away… I don’t usually like to leave a bad review, so tried to get it sorted with the restaurant but they can’t be bothered. Hence the review. Never going back.

I'M ON THE HUNT FOR BIRYANI!! (CHEAP FOOD) So many cultures of the world have their own special version of rice. I'm a big, big fan of biryani, which has roots in the Arab world and South Asian countries. How do I describe biryani? It's a very aromatic, flavoured basmati rice. In one spoonful, you can taste everything from cumin to turmeric, tomato, cinnamon, anise and more. It's very multi- layered, and has a hint of sweetness too. Not all rice was meant to be eaten white. Today we're visiting Student Biryani for their Pakistanı chicken biryani. They're quite a huge name, famous for their overly generous servings at a budget pricepoint. This wonderful plate will set you back $13, and there's a nice chunk of marinated chicken hiding underneath it all. Pour the yoghurt sauce on for the best experience (personal preference). At that pricepoint, it's hard not to like it! I thought the rice was a touch greasy, but that adds to the sauce and flavour in its own way. You don't want your biryani dry, right? The original Student Biryani store was actually in Pakistan (their story goes back to 1969 when, as the name suggests, they sold biryani to students and you'll actually see a photo of the founder on the shop wall). There has since been numerous Student Biryani shops set up around the world. Namely in countries like the US, Canada, Australia and in the Middle East. They have quite a presence in Dubai. I'm guessing the Student Biryani map might also make a nice map of Pakistani diaspora communities. I recently found out that on top of their Auburn location, they have stores in Surry Hills and Wollongong too! I guess my biryani hunt continues. Where to next guys? Happy to take your recs

Pretty disappointed with the taste of biryani. Raita is like you’re drinking water. Really need to improve quality.

I recently dined at Student Biryani in Surry Hills, and unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience. The Qorma we ordered was nothing like an authentic Qorma – it felt more like a basic curry with oil floating on top. The Nihari was equally unappetizing, lacking the rich, slow-cooked flavor it’s known for. Even the Halwa from the breakfast menu was a letdown, with none of the sweetness or texture I expected. This isn’t the first time I’ve had a bad experience at this location, but I wanted to give it another try. Sadly, the food quality has consistently been poor. I can confidently say that the chef here is not from Pakistan, as the flavors are far from authentic. Just two weeks ago, I dined at Student Biryani in Auburn, and the quality was miles ahead – authentic, flavorful, and exactly what you’d expect from a Pakistani restaurant. Surry Hills needs to seriously step up its game if it wants to compete. Very disappointing will not recommend.

DO NOT GO!!! I ordered the biryani family pack for a lunch event I was hosting and was shocked when my guests found long pieces of hair in their food! So disgusting! I was so embarrassed and immediately took the food away and chucked it in the bin. I called the restaurant immediately and wanted to speak to the manager, but the staff were very rude and did not want to give a name or details of the manager either. They said I should send them proof of the hair I found!! And then hung up on me three times! I later got a call from the manager and he was so rude and was yelling on the call saying if I don’t have a picture or proof he was not going to do anything! Wow! I will never go back and this place should be shut down for being so filthy and disgusting!
